Kenyan Sand Boa (Gongylophis colubrinus)
Description
These attractive snakes are desirable because they are readily tamed. Captive-bred rosy and sand boas are usually very docile.
- - As their name suggests, these snakes enjoy burrowing in the sand, and have their nostrils and eyes nearer to the top of their head to remain clear while burrowed in substrate
- - Females are generally larger than males
- - Enjoy burrowing, so a thick layer of sand or other loose substrate is recommended
- - While burrowed, their head remains above ground, ready to strike at passing prey

A well-balanced sand boa diet consists of appropriately sized frozen rodents, thawed/warmed to above room temperature. If feeding your snake live rodents, do not leave them unattended. Live rodents can injure the snake, sometimes fatally. Feed juveniles once a week, adults every one to two weeks. Feed in a separate tank so that your snake doesn't associate your hand or the habitat being opened with feeding. Fresh, clean, chlorine-free water should be available at all times in a bowl large enough for your snake to soak in.
Always wash your hands before and after handling your reptile and/or habitat contents to help prevent the potential spread of diseases.
