Is the heating pad warm enough on it's own?

Reeta

I have my cat in the garage since she refuses to come inside. She also refuses to go into the K & H house, but she loves using the pad in a chair. She likes a blanket over her, but the blanket always ends up underneath her somehow. I worry that she is not warm enough and also am concerned that the pad will malfunction from leaving a blanket on top of it. How can I tell if she is warm enough? It's 34 degrees outside tonight.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad to hear your cat is enjoying the heated pad, even if she prefers her own setup. Ferals often take time to feel comfortable with enclosed spaces like a heated house, so it’s completely normal that she avoids it. Moving the pad to a spot where she feels safer was a great call and clearly helped her find the warmth. To check that she’s staying warm, feel the pad after she’s been lying on it — it should be comfortably warm. Her behavior is also a good indicator; if she chooses to stay on the pad and relax, she’s likely comfortable. Thank you again for the review and for giving her a warm, safe place to rest.

Love these!

Buying our third one - our cats love them! This one is replacing one I have had a long time - maybe 5-6 yrs? - and it has been truly outdoor (not under cover) the whole time. (I have one cat who refuses anything under cover). We do prefer to fold the entire front piece under the house for a larger front opening. Easier access for cleaning also.

Thank you for being such a long‑time customer and for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear your outdoor house has held up well over the years. Folding the front piece under for a larger opening is a great tip — it makes cleaning easier and gives pets more flexibility, especially those who prefer open access. We appreciate your feedback and are happy our products continue to support your cat’s comfort outdoors.

Glad we got one

For our feral

In addition to our 4 cats who use the cat door on the side of the house, we have a feral one. He’s not very sociable, but he likes to come in to eat and rest. He hasn’t figured out how to use the cat door yet, so we bought one of these houses for him. We weren’t sure if he’d discovered it (it took over a week) 1986 and today, my husband took this pic of him. We are so glad we got this house for him, and he’s using it, because we get very cold temperatures, ice, and snow. It was easy to put together, and yes, it doesn’t feel as warm as we think it should, but it’s perfect for them. We highly recommend it!!

Our barn kitties absolutely LOVE these heated Kitty Houses! We live in Vermont & winters are cold here but our cats simply curl up in their houses (unless they are eating, of course)!

My feral barn cat loves this heated cabin!

My feral barn cat, Ruth, loves her new heated log cabin! My one criticizm is that I do not think this kitty house would hold up if left outside in the elements. Mine is in my goat barn, so it should be good. Ruth loves to snuggle and she enjoys using the front door to go in her house and the handy back door to exit.

Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear that Ruth loves her new heated log cabin and enjoys using both the front and back doors. We understand your concern about durability in the elements, and we want to reassure you that this is a popular choice for outdoor use with feral cats. We receive many positive reviews about how well it holds up in various weather conditions. With its corrugated wall panels, heavy-duty fabric, and weather-resistant cover, it’s designed to provide reliable warmth and protection for outdoor cats. We're so happy to know Ruth is enjoying her cozy new home in the barn!

Questions

1 - 8 of 8 Questions

Is this house big enough for 2 small cats?

  1. This will depend on the size of your cats. The sleeping surface area for this product is 14" x 18". For multiple cats, we recommend our Outdoor Multi-Kitty A-Frame, which has a sleeping surface of 19" x 24".

Is it safe to cover the cords with PVC/vinyl tubing or would that overheat the product?

  1. Yes the cords can be wrapped with wire, vinyl, etc. there is no hazard to do so.

Will this comfortably fit a full grown Male cat? Are you able to keep the heating pad plugged in 24/7 and it will stay on? Is this an auto shut off or continuous run?

  1. It depends on the size of your cat, but it should be plenty big. The sleeping surface dimensions are 18" L x 14" W. MET Safety Laboratories suggests unplugging the bed if you leave your home on an extended vacation, as they do with any electrical appliance. Otherwise, it is designed for 24/7 operation and you can leave it plugged in all day. There is not an off/on switch. The pad is always on when plugged in. This item has been certified by MET labs to adhere to strict electrical safety standards. For more information, please visit www.metlabs.com.

Could we be able to put a fleece throw inside it too?

  1. You never want to place anything on top of a K&H outdoor bed or pad other than the cover provided. This cover allows the warmth to go through whereas a blanket or any other cover will trap the heat inside the bed or pad, possibly causing a malfunction.

Can additional hay be put inside the house?

  1. Straw, sawdust, hay and/or wood shavings are very combustible and we would never advise using them in conjunction with any type of electrical or heated products. Please keep the pad separate from areas that contain combustible materials.

Would this product require a covered roof or overhang over it or can it stand out on its own in snow? I can place it on cement blocks so it doesn't sit on a wet surface but can it support snow on it and be out in the open?

  1. Thank you for your question. Its vinyl backing and 600 denier nylon construction create a waterproof structure that protects cats from rain, snow, and wind. A roof overhang helps shield the house's front and rear doorways. We understand that pets collect snow and water from being outdoors. Our products are designed to be used safely with pets, even when the pet is water-soaked. Please make sure to place the bed or pad in a relatively dry area such as a covered porch, garage, kennel or dog house. The bed or pad should not be placed where there is a potential for standing water from heavy rain and the product should not be immersed in water.

How long is the electric cord & can it be used with an extension cord if necessary? Also, can this product tolerate sitting out in an area where it would get covered in snow? Thanks for your assistance.

  1. The cord is 5.5 feet long. MET requires that all manufacturers put the extension cord statement “Do not use with extension cord” on every item that is MET listed by UL 499 standards. This is because they cannot test every extension cord on the market in conjunction with our products for safety. Also, MET suggests that an extension cord is not recommended as a permanent fixture and should only be a temporary solution when using any electrical product. Temporary use of a UL listed cord is fine, but consult your electrician for the proper cord for your application. For more information on MET safety testing, please visit their website at www.metlabs.com. Its vinyl backing and 600 denier nylon construction create a waterproof structure that protects cats from rain, snow, and wind. A roof overhang helps shield the house's front and rear doorways. The bed or pad should not be placed where there is a potential for standing water from heavy rain and the product should not be immersed in water.

How many adult cats can use this house? I have three feral cats.

  1. Hi Zula, Thank you for your question. The K&H Outdoor Heated Kitty House is really designed for one kitty. A better option for multiple kitties would be the K&H Outdoor Heated Multi-Kitty A-Frame. It has a sleep surface that measures 19" x 24".
