Is the heating pad warm enough on it's own?

Reeta

I have my cat in the garage since she refuses to come inside. She also refuses to go into the K & H house, but she loves using the pad in a chair. She likes a blanket over her, but the blanket always ends up underneath her somehow. I worry that she is not warm enough and also am concerned that the pad will malfunction from leaving a blanket on top of it. How can I tell if she is warm enough? It's 34 degrees outside tonight.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re glad to hear your cat is enjoying the heated pad, even if she prefers her own setup. Ferals often take time to feel comfortable with enclosed spaces like a heated house, so it’s completely normal that she avoids it. Moving the pad to a spot where she feels safer was a great call and clearly helped her find the warmth. To check that she’s staying warm, feel the pad after she’s been lying on it — it should be comfortably warm. Her behavior is also a good indicator; if she chooses to stay on the pad and relax, she’s likely comfortable. Thank you again for the review and for giving her a warm, safe place to rest.

Love these!

Buying our third one - our cats love them! This one is replacing one I have had a long time - maybe 5-6 yrs? - and it has been truly outdoor (not under cover) the whole time. (I have one cat who refuses anything under cover). We do prefer to fold the entire front piece under the house for a larger front opening. Easier access for cleaning also.

Thank you for being such a long‑time customer and for sharing your experience! We’re glad to hear your outdoor house has held up well over the years. Folding the front piece under for a larger opening is a great tip — it makes cleaning easier and gives pets more flexibility, especially those who prefer open access. We appreciate your feedback and are happy our products continue to support your cat’s comfort outdoors.

Glad we got one

For our feral

In addition to our 4 cats who use the cat door on the side of the house, we have a feral one. He’s not very sociable, but he likes to come in to eat and rest. He hasn’t figured out how to use the cat door yet, so we bought one of these houses for him. We weren’t sure if he’d discovered it (it took over a week) 1986 and today, my husband took this pic of him. We are so glad we got this house for him, and he’s using it, because we get very cold temperatures, ice, and snow. It was easy to put together, and yes, it doesn’t feel as warm as we think it should, but it’s perfect for them. We highly recommend it!!

My feral barn cat loves this heated cabin!

My feral barn cat, Ruth, loves her new heated log cabin! My one criticizm is that I do not think this kitty house would hold up if left outside in the elements. Mine is in my goat barn, so it should be good. Ruth loves to snuggle and she enjoys using the front door to go in her house and the handy back door to exit.

Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear that Ruth loves her new heated log cabin and enjoys using both the front and back doors. We understand your concern about durability in the elements, and we want to reassure you that this is a popular choice for outdoor use with feral cats. We receive many positive reviews about how well it holds up in various weather conditions. With its corrugated wall panels, heavy-duty fabric, and weather-resistant cover, it’s designed to provide reliable warmth and protection for outdoor cats. We're so happy to know Ruth is enjoying her cozy new home in the barn!

Questions

1 - 10 of 12 Questions

Where can I find a replacement heating pad for this bed?

  1. Hi TG22, Thank you for your inquiry regarding the proper replacement heating pad on the K&H Gray and Black OD Cat house. The Small K&H Lectro-Soft Heated bed is bed you want to purchase for this house measuring at 14x18.

This house has kept an outdoor cat warm so far this winter. What would be the lowest outdoor temperature that you would recommend using this house to keep a cat warm and safe?

  1. K&H outdoor beds and pads are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature of 102°F when he/she lies on the bed or pad. When your pet is not on the bed or pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature. However, we do recommend placing the bed in an area that provides extra protection from extreme weather.

What are the SLEEPING dimensions inside item #2647318 I see alot of different sizes in comment section . Which is correct?

  1. The sleeping surface area for this product is 14" x 18". For multiple cats, we recommend our Outdoor Multi-Kitty A-Frame, which has a sleeping surface of 19" x 24".

Does sleeping bed use batteries or electricity?

  1. The bed uses an electrical outlet as a power source. Please note that our product engineers have worked tirelessly to minimize the power consumption of our best-selling Pet Bed Warmers while maximizing their heat output efficiency. Every size Pet Bed Warmer uses less energy than most light bulbs, helping keep your electrical bills low.

Can you put hay inside this heated house for extra warmth?

  1. I just learned a saying from the aspca when I was researching bedding for outdoor cats-Hay is for horses and Straw is for strays. Learned straw will wick moisture away from a damp cat and insulates well. Hay will retain moisture and is sharp. Surprisingly cotton towels or blankets will actually make a cat colder, they get damp, stay damp and freeze in cold temps. The pad cover for this heated bed is 100% polyester maybe? They don’t recommend adding anything else to the house for insulation as it could damage heating element. Maybe insulate the outside somehow. Also, this house is in no way water proof.. I learned the hard way.

Can a cat with sharp claws cut the heated pad? I would like to purchase for the feral cat that lives on my patio.

  1. Although not 100% scratch proof the bed is durable and designed to keep outdoor and feral cats safe and warm.

Would this fit inside a big 33 gallon trash can?

  1. It depends on the interior dimensions of the trash can. The dimensions of this product are 22" L x 18" W x 17" H.

Is the heat from a pad or from something like radiant heating in the floor? Also, can one put a pillow or blanket over the heat element to make it comfy for my wonderful feral cat?

  1. No, you should not use a pillow or blanket on the interior heated pad. All K&H heated beds and pads feature dual thermostats and are designed to warm to your pet's normal body temperature when he/she lies on the pad. This is a function of the insulation provided by a pet’s body, not the weight of the pet. K&H beds and pads will emit heat anytime they are plugged in so your pet can sense that heat and be drawn to the bed or pad for warmth and comfort. When your pet is not on the pad, the heat will dissipate into the air and the surface temperature will vary according to the ambient air temperature.

I have two Feral cats, one is a chubby male and the other is a dainty female, do you think both of them will fit in this house?

  1. yes, I had the same situation with mine, but my big feral tom cat passed last year, so my dainty little calico has it all to herself now.

Can snow soak through the roof ? With cats body temp plus pad is this fine for occasionally below 0 ?

  1. At that temperature, pets should be brought inside for safety reasons, however, our outdoor heated beds and pads are water-resistant. We understand that pets collect snow and water from being outdoors. Our products are designed to be used safely with pets, even when the pet is water-soaked. Please make sure to place the bed or pad in a relatively dry area such as a covered porch, garage, kennel or dog house. The bed or pad should not be placed where there is a potential for standing water from heavy rain and the product should not be immersed in water.
