Great for making food at home

Maria P.

This makes it so easy to make my dog’s food at home. She’s allergic to meat so I make her this fish recipe and she loves it.

Not sure yet-gave it 4 stars bc the recipe has added ingredients from the prior version.

I received the latest version of JFFD Fish and Sweet Potato recipe nutrient blend as well as the updated ie changed recipe. I have the old JFFD recipe which calls for 4 lbs-8 oz Pacific cod (full recipe), 5. 75 oz Safflower oil and 4 Tbsp nutrient blend vs the current recipe that calls for 4 lbs-10 oz deboned whitefish, 4 oz Sunflower oil, 2 oz lemon juice, 1-1/2 oz Flaxseed(ground), 1/2 oz dried seaweed and only 2 T nutrient blend. All other ingredients/proportions remain the same for sweet potatoes, Russet potatoes, green beans and broccoli. I haven’t made the recipe yet bc I don’t have dried seaweed and will have to order it. It seems a little more cumbersome but maybe a healthier version?

Too good to let go

Just food for dogs really helped me out when my dog went through her first heat and suddenly became a super picky eater. Once she was past that period in her life, she certainly became less picky, but is obviously disappointed if I don't serve her food from just food for dogs. Since I'm moving abroad, I needed some means to get around this problem and the nutrient blends solved that problem for me. If anything, she's happier with the fresh made version. My only complaint is I really wish the recipes also supported metric. In other countries, ingredients are in grams, so I had to convert everything myself.

Picky eater LOVES it!!

We have a picky eater that has gotten even pickier with her older age. She LOVES the chicken and rice. We tried the frozen packs for a few weeks and then decided to try the DIY recipes. Our little girl will JUMP when it’s time to eat. We are so thankful for this nutritious option for our pups. And it’s so easy!

Changed Recipe

Liza

I have been using this DIY recipe and nutrient mix for almost 2 years. It was great for my girl who has a sensitive stomach. Recently she began have GI issues (vomiting and diarrhea). After multiple vet visits and ruling out other causes it was the new formula of this fish and sweet potato recipe. The GI symptoms came back every time I reintroduced this food. They changed the recipe/nutrient mix and didn’t indicate anywhere on the package that they changed the recipe. On the search again for another food for my girl’s sensitive stomach.

By choosing organic ingredients (and replacing sunflower oil with pure and minimally processed sunflower seed butter), plus using wild-caught salmon and sardines for the fish, I am able to save on the cost, make sure everything is truly (although a home freeze drier is a substantial cost) fresh, and freeze dry half of the batch to have a truly healthy food (which tastes as good to me, as it does to my dog). Using only healthy (specialty) salt also enhances the flavors and goodness.

IBD Symptoms Gone

My 4 year old Boykin spaniel has suffered from IBD for her whole life. She never ate consistently and has dealt with monthly bouts of diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. After a particularly bad GI episode we decided to try the diy cod recipe. She has been eating every single meal since we switched (about two months) which hasn’t happened in her entire 4 years of life! She has had no GI issues or IBD flare ups and we couldn’t be more excited.

Too difficult to find the ingredient

celia c.

I gave up and never used it. None of my local stores—Walmart, Harris Teeter, Wegman’s, Whole Foods—had all of the ingredients. I think they should find more common ingredients. It’s like they’re trying to make it difficult so we buy their prepackaged meals.

Questions

Can I mix the protein instead of using fish could I do chicken my dog can't eat beef lamb or rice

  1. Yes, you can use chicken. my dog was overweight, we started her on the fish, sweet potato, carrots, and green beans and the powdered supplement, we cook all her food ourselves at home. She lost 10 lbs. Now we give her the fish meal in AM, and we give her the chicken, sweet potato, green beans, carrots for dinner. just need to measure the amount for your dog's weight group.

Where is this product made and manufactured? And where are the ingredients sourced from? Is any part of this from China?

  1. None are made in China, they're all made in the usa. Just food for dogs are have 100% dried foods. In some locations you can see them make them from scratch.

Can you swap the sweet potato for russet potato? My dog has tons of allergies and hates sweet potato, but can only tolerate fish.

  1. The instructions state to follow the recipe exactly, but they have consults that you can do with a nutritionist if you go to their website, so I would check out that option.
