We recommend 1-1.5 pounds of substrate per gallon of your aquarium to achieve 2'' substrate. Place sand into a separate container (not your aquarium) to thoroughly rinse sand prior to placing into your aquarium. This will reduce cloudiness when placing into your aquarium, but not all dust or debris will be removed from the initial rinse. We recommend rinsing 2 or 3 times prior to placing sand in the aquarium. What remains will settle or be consumed by your filtration.

Caution: Not Suitable For Children. Rinse Well With Water Before Placing In Aquarium.

Clumps - is it like cat-fish litter?

Bob5309

A lot of floating clumps after rinsing. I put these bags of sand in my new aquarium and after most of it settled, there were a lot of clumps floating around the top. I needed to use a fine net to catch the clumps. It would be hard to return :(

No, I do not recommend this product.

How big are the sand particles?

  1. Hi platies4life, Good day! The size range of the sand particles is 0.1 mm to 1.5 mm. Based on the gradation report, the majority of the sand particles fall within .15 mm to .7 mm. Thanks

does this have calcium in it? what sand has no calcium?

  1. Hi Valued Guest, Good day! Because this is a natural silica sand, it is likely to have trace amounts of calcium, and that will be true for all the other natural sands. The black planted substrate (SKU 3865608) for an aquatic set-up as an alternate option if you are looking for something black that is not calcium based. However, this product is coarser than the tan sand. Thanks

Is this natural or artificial sand? If it's natural why it should be rinsed ?

  1. HI Valued Guest, Good day! important to rinse sand before putting it in the aquarium to remove any dust or debris. This will reduce cloudiness when placing into your aquarium, but not all dust or debris will be removed from the initial rinse. We recommend rinsing 2 or 3 times prior to placing sand in the aquarium. What remains will settle or be consumed by your filtration. Thanks

is this good for betta fish?

  1. Hi Sam Jonas, Good day! Yes, the sand is safe to use with betta fish. Any substrate used should be rinsed thoroughly before adding to the tank and water should be cycled to ensure safe levels before adding fish to a new tank. Thanks
