inaccurate & red liquid is unsafe when broken. Bought two of these for my 5 gal betta tank, the first one had a gap in the liquid that I couldn’t fix & made it unreadable. The second thermometer reads my tank at a constant 72° while it was actually around >80°, caused issues with my betta and I’m currently writing this as she’s sitting in a hospital tank with treatment for columnaris.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Thermometer kept reading 40 degrees even though room temp was ranging 70- 75. Tested the water with another thermometer and it read 72 degrees. Took it out and shook it, put it back in and again went to 40 degrees. Junk

Since when is kerosene non-toxic? I worked in the Navy on aircraft and it certainly wasn't safe for us to handle without PPE so how in God's name can you consider it safe for fish? Maybe you want to explain it to my axolotl who may not recover from what it has done to his skin? If I could have I would have given it zero stars. And if I had realized when it happened that there is kerosene in it I would have taken a pic of the broken thermometer......unreal....

I bought for a new tank, it always read 74. I thought my heater wasn’t working, so I ordered a new one. Before putting it in, decided to try a different thermometer from another tank. That thermometer read 80. This thermometer is inaccurate and hard to see/read the temp on it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

This thing broke so easily. Thank goodness upon reading reviews here, it is not mercury. I did not notice the break just the balls on the substrate. Red did not come out. I can't recommend this product regardless.

What is the purpose of the little brown balls at the very bottom of the thermometer? What are they and what do they do?

  1. Hi bobby890. Good day! The little brown balls at the bottom of the thermometer are there to provide weight and prevent the thermometer from floating. Thanks,

Is this something that needs to be replaced like every month, or does it actually last?

  1. The thermometer lasts for however long you take care of it. The suction, though, is another story and will eventually fail. I ended up tying a piece of string from the failed suction to outside the tank and used a magnet cleaner to hold it in place 2+ years and counting.

How do I remove the red liquid from the tank? The tank is empty and has no water, but the thermometer fell off the glass and broke inside. The red liquid dried very fast and it isn't coming off, what do I do?

  1. Hi Maiasaura, The red liquid is made of aviation kerosene and pigment so it dries very fast . We suggest to clean it with detergent + warm water or cleaning ball. Thanks,

How durable is it? I'm worried about it breaking. Furthermore, if it were to break inside the tank would it kill my animals? Thanks.

  1. It is durable. I have had a broken one in the tank and nothing happened to the fish but I caught it pretty much right away.

Could I use this for a red eared slider turtl aquarium?

  1. Hi Krystal123, This would be fine to use in a underwater environment that is freshwater. Thanks,

Where can I get replacement suction cups? Suction cups don't stick to glass anymore.

  1. Better to get thermometer with magnet! The suction cups work but they tend to not stick if the aquarium gets algae on the inside.

Is the balls on the bottom lead or steel?

  1. I don't recall any glass thermometers to have steal in the bulb end. They have led as far as I know. But rest assured they are made of good rate glass that is resistant to breakage.

What should I do if the balls on the bottom fall down? Also, what if the alcohol got melted and got stuck on the aqurium floor or wall?

  1. To me I hoped that nothing went wrong when I bought that thermometer but a couple of months later during a water change I found it had broken on the top of it. I never took it off of the aquarium it was there since I bought it. So i don’t know why it broke.

Do those little balls on the bottom kill beneficial bacteria?

  1. No they do not. The only time it is harmful is when it gets broken and the alchohol leaks into the tank.

will it mount to a Hawkeye 3-Gallon 360 View Aquarium. my tank is small and round or dose it have to have a flat surface?

  1. My suction cup never sticks to even the flat service. But I have no problem with it floating around in the tank.
