Just started with this particular food. My "puppy" appears to like it. As for his health we will have to wait until he has consumed a few portions.

No, I do not recommend this product.

changed formula and kibble

Debbie

My dog has been on this food for years and does very well. Upon opening a new bag the pieces are very small, like cat food. I checked and apparently the size and formula has changed. I have a 55lb mixed breed dog that now swallows up the food because its so small. Not sure why the kibble would be made so small. I will not be purchasing this anymore.

Thank you for your review. We're disappointed of hear of your experience. To maintain our leadership in nutritional health care for companion animals, we periodically make changes to product formulas to incorporate additional health or product design benefits. Despite the favorable benefits gained through the reformulation, our pets are creatures of habit and may need a little help to get accustomed to the change in the food. We recommend using Hill's Science Diet Adult Perfect Weight Large Breed Chicken Recipe Dog Food which comes in a larger kibble for large breed dogs.

Changing formula and kibble size without notice is not good business!!

Our Lab has been on this food for two years. We get it autoshipped in 25lb bags every 7 weeks. My husband opened today’s bag because we used up the previous bag and saw there was a size and shape change. He thought it was cat food!! Nothing on the bag to say anything has changed. Came here to see if anyone else found this issue only to see that the formula has changed as well. Not on the bag!! Recommendations are to transition to this food over 7 days. How do I do that if I can’t find the previous formula? This is very, very poor marketing!! I guess I will be out $88 if my dog gets sick because I guarantee I wouldn’t get a refund.

Do they even really care about the health of dogs?

Not Happy

Not happy they changed the formula and kibble size with very little to no information on the bag. Hope my dog can handle the change. Do they even really care about the health of dogs? There 2 things you should never mess with a dad or mom on as a corporation. Family and their family dog :( Major let down!!

No, I do not recommend this product.

New Kibble Shape and Size

A in VA

I have been using the small bite kibble for the last 4.5 years and my dog is super healthy. But like another reviewer noted, HSD changed the shape of the kibble. It is smaller and resembles hearts. I am not sure why they changed it, or if the formula changed but I do wish some type of info was placed on the bag to let owners know. As far as amount goes. I weighed the same scoop amount of the two different shapes. The new shape allows for more kibble is the same size scoop. So essentially the dog gets more. I am hoping the formula is the same because I did not allow for transition.

We apologize for any confusion. We’ve recently made changes to this product. Primarily, we changed the kibble to a heart shape. Some order of ingredients has changed, and we’ve removed Apples, Broccoli, Cranberries and Green Peas from the formula. If you have any of the previous formula, we recommend a gradual transition over 7-10 days.

Surprise! The Kibble is smaller

R&R mom

I have bought this dog food for my 2 rescues for the last 4 years but the latest bag has smaller bites. They are a lot smaller than the previous bag. There was no wording on the bag stating that they were small bites or a new kibble size. I just feel a little cheated and will now have to figure out if the feeding chart is correct for my dogs.

Thank you for your feedback. Please know, we did change the formulation of the Science Diet Canine Perfect Weight Dry Food. While the primary ingredients remain consistent, there have been a few updates including the kibble change to the heart-shaped pieces. When there is a reformulation, we generally suggest doing a 7-day transition, as this allows your pet time to get used to the new flavor and ingredients. The food was delivered on time as promised and our pup is very happy. So are we. The devastation at EastGate shopping center from the storm is terrible. Businesses closed. people out of work, etc. I drove there to get dog food at Petco and saw cars upside down in the parking lot. I hope there were no injuries.

  1. Thank you for your question. This food is recommended for adult dogs ages 1 years old on up. Hill's Pet Nutrition

What is the Max Crude Fat % in this food?

  1. Thank you for your question. The dry matter basis of fat in this food is 11.2%. Hill's Pet Nutrition

My mini wire hair doxie needs to lose 4 lbs. urrent weight 18 lbs. Idal weight 14lbs. Fall between guidelines on bag. Can you give me daily measure to start with to lose weightg

  1. We serve our long-haired Doxie mix, 3/4 of a cup in the morning and again at night. She has lost about 9 lbs this year and looks completely different.

Is Hill’s Science “Perfect Weight” food which is sold at Petco the same as Hill’s Science “Metabolic” food that is only available at Veterinary clinics?

  1. Thank you for your inquiry. Our Hill's Science Diet Perfect Weight dry dog food is recommended adult dogs, including those that are less active, neutered or otherwise prone to weight gain. This formula offers clinically proven technology for safe & effective weight loss with visible results within 10 weeks. On the other hand our Prescription Diet Metabolic formula offers a synergistic blend of ingredients which includes a unique fiber blend from fruits and vegetables that naturally works with your dog's unique metabolism. I switched to Hill's Science Diet about 7 weeks ago to try to help my dogs lose weight. One is 19# and should weigh about 12#; the other is 29# and should weigh about 22#. I have been feeding them about 1-1/4 cups per day but they haven't lost any weight

  1. I have a golden retriever who weighed 77 lbs and she had lost that girly look around her back hips. She is on the Perfect Weight food 1 1/4 cups, twice a day. I haven't taken her to the vets to get weighed but she has almost finished a large bag of this food. I do think she has lost a little weight but with this virus going around I can't take her out running in the woods, which really helps a lot. I am not crazy by the small bits since I had taught her to chew her food (which was a larger kibble) and she might chew a mouthful or two because I tell her too but basically inhales it.

can diabetic dog eat this food ,vet recommends low fat diet

  1. This food is 11.2% fat free on a dry matter basis. That’s with all the moisture removed, so you can compare it to another product by dry matter basis and be comparing apples to apples. That’s relatively low fat, as dog foods go, but there’s lower out there. You need to ask your vet how low in fat on a dry matter basis he or she wants.  The Hills Science Diet Light kibble (compared to the perfect weight) is a bit lower in fat.

How many calories per cup?

  1. Perfect Weight (as shown on bag): 3191 kcal ME/kg 299 kcal ME/cup 80 lb Lab (this worked for my dog): 3 1/2 cups for weight loss 5 1/2 cups for weight management

Are there reviews by verified purchasers ? All seem to be from part of or a freebie “sweepstakes entry”  ?

Do you know of any side effects such as shedding more than usual?

    1. This is an unusual report. We’d suggest consulting with your veterinarian for guidance if your pet has started to shed more. Hill’s Pet Nutrition

We currently are using the sensitive stomach by Hills. Our King Charles is overweight, and we are looking to change his food. Science Diet, is this food ok for sensitive stomachs, and are the calories low enough in comparison for our Pup to loose weight?

    1. Hi Jeffsretired, This is not specially formulated for pet's with sensitive stomach, so it will be best if you could consult your vet for suggestions. On the other hand, this product only has 291 kcal/cup. Thanks
