So far so good

Jhonaker

So far my cat will eat it, but only when it’s fresh out of a new can. Come on Hills, we need smaller cans. 4 stars because so much food gets thrown away.

My cat loves it but the portion is too big and he won’t eat it after it’s been open. Please make a smaller size!

My cat loves it. I’m thankful cause it is so pricey. Thankfully Petco had the discounts for 1st time buy with on-going subscription discounts. It came pretty fast after the script was approved as well!

Yes, I recommend this product.

Too dry

Benny

Consistency too dry and solid. I have to take a lot of time to cut it up small enough for my 17 yr old cat to eat. It doesn't just break up easily like many other cat foods. Clinically I like that I can manage his thyroid this way since he had a toxic reaction to Methimazole and we elected not to do the radioactive iodine.

Consumer Affairs
Hello Benny, thank you for reaching out to us. First, we want to assure you this consistency variation has no effect on the nutritional value of the food. Dry and crumbly canned product can be the result of exposure to very cold temperatures during transportation and distribution. Please be assured that every truck load of canned product leaving our canning facility during cold weather months, uses thermal blankets. In addition, canned products receive priority upon arrival to distribution centers.

Thyroid Care

My cat Boo

My cat was put on this food several months ago so I bought both dry and wet. The cans of wet need to be half the size if possible as I end up throwing away more than half of the can once opened as my cat will not eat it once it has been in the refrigerator. Also are there any treats for cats with thyroid issues? Thanks

Dents, dents, dents

Ive had my 18 year old cat on Hills YD thyroid for 4 years .The thyroid is a 5 oz can, too big for it to stay fresh, cats don’t eat like dogs and1/4 or more most times, gets thrown out, cat won’t eat it ..it also smells & looks bad by the end of the second day, that’s with a tight lid in the fridge .Every time I get a case of the YD a third are dented. Lids always have “impressions” never a flat solid seal. HELLO HILLS, it’s not good to serve food from dented cans or dented lids. Cans in the MIDDLE of the case are dented, it’s a problem at Hills. Dented cans from shipping would show a dented outer box. But when the shipping box is pristine and the cans are compromised, you figure it out. This delivery 8 out of 24 cans dented and virtually every lid has impressions instead of a tight lid on top. If I ever have another cat with thyroid issues I’ll send them for the radiation- never again will they have this YD food from Hills. I should have pulled her off this but hindsight. Also they claim when using this product exclusively, it can resolve the issue. It doesn’t. Four years eating this stuff and she still needs meds. This food is NOT worth what we pay if the cans are compromised. I’m sick of complaining to Petco or Chewy about a Hills problem with every shipment. The food comes from Hills boxed and shrink wrapped. Why are so many cans dented? Shame on you Hills for the price you charge.

Works as advertised : Canned & Dry

My two ragamuffin siblings have been eating this for a few years both wet and dry. Rusty only eats canned he's 17. Please make this product in smaller cans since he will only eat 1/4 of the can at a time & only when it is freshly opened. he will not eat it after being tightly sealed in glass and stored in the refrigerator. Even heating slightly in the microwave does not help. The only way he will eat this food now is by blending it into a more watery paste and adding Gerber baby food chicken to it.

Questions

When is Hills going to make 3 OUNCE cans of prescription food? How many cats out of a household of them or like our one cat can eat a 5.5 oz can? It goes bad, begins to smell terrible after the second day open -the cat won’t eat it. Throw out $$$$$$$

  1. Thanks for the shout out but I do exactly that with the plastic wrap and the light reheating….it’s just frustrating, the cost does not make this any less frustrating- I would consider Royal Canin if they had a similar product. Sadly giving her the meds in the dose she needs makes her a 24 hour zombie, at least she is fairly normal with half dose and this food.. if she would eat it.

Some of the comments i've read are older. So, as of June 2020 has Hill's come up with any new textures, gravies, flavors for their wet y/d cat food??? and if not, WHY? Ellie @12yr. would like beef! or pork! and quality due to price! $$$ yikes!

  1. My kitty passed last December due to kidney issues. My vet determined that the thyroid was working harder because of his kidneys. But while he was on the thyroid y/d his thyroid issue was under control. It was a bummer there is only one flavor and $$ Garfield wouldn’t have taken the alternative medicine very well or at all and it was almost as $$ the vet that prescribed the y/d said if he was on medication he could eat whatever he wanted but on y/d only y/d I think in hind site if you can but the medicated ointment in his ears he would have been happier to eat whatever he wanted. It was so pitiful to see Garfield beg for our food. Makes me sad.
