An Essential Part of a Proper Diet for Dog's with a Cystine Stones Condition

NaomiSRQ

We rescued Tank shortly after his first bday and he already had a surgery to remove cystine stones. He was on Hill's u/d when we adopted him so we asked our vet to continue the prescription. Tank has a big appetite, but he's a picky eater and he enjoys the u/d both on its own or when mixed with fresh dog food. I did a lot of research on cystine stones in dogs and the prognosis is not promising. If the dog develops cystine stones as a puppy the stones can come back as soon as 6 months after surgery. It's been 2 years since Tank's surgery and he's still stone free! I read some 1 star reviews that claim the Hill's u/d prescription diet doesn't work because his/her dogs have had multiple surgeries while on the food. Hill's u/d is a magic wand for dogs with cystine stones, but I think it is an essential part of a proper diet. I believe that through adherence to Hill's u/d dry dog food coupled with K-Plus granules (potassium citrate supplement) and attention to the avoidance of foods that can promote stones (high sodium) - dogs with this condition can live a long, happy and healthy life!

Good food - Wish you made U/D treats

Renee

I had taken my dog to the emergency vet and found out my boy had cystine stones. It was recommended to give him the U/D diet. Although pricey, it's definitely cheaper than a surgery. I wish there were treats available because having to grind his food and cook it in my oven is horrible. The smell is gross.

Terribly Frustrated with UD

LD

My rottweiller would rather starve than eat this food. When he does eat it he losses muscle tone and coat. Cystine Dog groups I found on FB have the same problem. There are no flavor options or kibble size options.

Stone disappears

Lucy

Our Lab mix 70lb dog was diagnosed with a bladder stone over 2 inches in diameter. Our Vet recommended Hills to Home Urinary Care diet. After two months on the diet a shrinkage of the stone was seen on xray. After 4 months on the diet the stone had completely disappeared. Saved a surgery!

Low in purines keeps urate stones from forming!

AmyBeav

My dog likes the taste of this and I like that it’s low in purines to keep him from forming more Utica acid stones after having a perineal urethrostomy back in August.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I am happy to say this food works great he hasn't had any issue with stones since we started this diet for him. We have noticed that he has put on more weight since switching food and he has become way more active like he was a puppy again.

Questions

1 - 3 of 3 Questions
Sort by: Newest Answers

Does anyone mix the canned and dry?

  1. No I do not however I mix dry with some raw ground meat

What is the difference between the U/d and c/d versions of the food?

  1. I’m not sure about the c/d, but the u/d diet is low in purines. Often used for Dalmatians or dogs who might have urinary crystals due to medication. These both require a vet prescription, so defer to your vet for the best fit for your dog.

do the make a 17 lb bag

  1. Thank you for your question. Unfortunately this formula is only offered in a 8.5 and 27.5 lb bag. We hope this helps! Hill's Pet Nutrition
