Description

When cats have damage to kidney tissues, the kidneys cannot perform as well as before, like filtering and reabsorbing nutrients. The condition is not reversible, but progression may be slowed. Therapeutic foods for kidney conditions are designed to help reduce workload on the kidneys, enabling them to function more effectively. Cats with decreased kidney function may experience loss of appetite and their food intake might decline. Hill's nutritionists and veterinarians developed Hill's Prescription Diet k/d clinical nutrition with ActivBiome+ Kidney Defense, a proprietary blend of prebiotics shown to activate the gut microbiome to help protect kidney function. Prescription Diet k/d is also formulated with Enhanced Appetite Trigger (E.A.T) to stimulate appetite and increase food intake. This dry food is made with chicken and has an irresistible taste that your cat will love.

My 17 year old male cat Smokey has been on this for 3 years. He is slower but happy and purrs all the time. Never had a problem getting him to adapt to it. When I mixed it with the old food he would pick the K/D out and leave the old. Next day I just fed him this.

I barely got the stuff, the cat is only on the 3rd day of transistioning from her old food, but dhe did throw up for the first time since starting her old food 6 mos. ago. The puke was all Hills, so I'm hoping she can tolerate it, the stuff is too expensive for her to not be able to eat it.

No, I do not recommend this product.

My cat has been on the Kidney Care diet for a month now and I see zero improvement. In fact, he is getting worse. VetCo vets are not responding to my requests for a follow up to discuss his issues.

No, I do not recommend this product.

We appreciate your feedback. We could not tell by your post if you had done a gradual transition or not. We generally suggest doing a 7-day transition, as this allows them time to get used to the new flavor and ingredients. This can also help ward off against any sort of tummy trouble. We hope this is helpful.

Questions

1 - 5 of 5 Questions

Do I need a vet's prescription to purchase hill KD food?

  1. Yes, typically you can add your vet’s contact information and the pet food site will contact them to request the prescription. Your vet must have previously prescribed the food during a vet visit.

Did the K/D diet dry food kibble size change? My new bag of K/D has significantly smaller kibbles than what is printed on the outside of the bag, as well as what we have received in all previous bags of food.

do you make a cat food with gravy

    1. They do have a wet food version of K/D. The stew ones are in a sauce.

What does the K/D stand for in the name of the food? I see others have KM is there a difference in the formula?

    1. KM may be k/d + mobility?

Can you feed this to cats without kidney problems

    1. Thank you for your question. This food is formulated for a specific medical concern. We would suggest speaking to your veterinarian for a diet recommendation. Hill’s Pet Nutrition
