Not consistent! To much FAT in can.

Have been giving this food to my papillon for kidney disease, why is there so much FAT in the cans??? Food is not consistent either. Either it's mush, or very HARD in consistency.... would like an answer to this.

Thank you for your feedback. Although the white substance appears to be fat, it is likely starch that has separated out of the product through cooking and cooking in the can. This is similar to the fat which solidifies on the top of your soup or stew after it has been refrigerated. We can assure you this has no effect on the food's nutritional value. We recommend stirring the separated ingredients back into the canned food prior to feeding.

Picky Dog Loves This Food

MomofTwins

Our vet recommended this food, and our dog absolutely loves it. She just turned 15 years old and has been a picky eater lately, so we are delighted. The texture and taste appeal to her. I saw a review where someone complained about the pull top can because it makes it more difficult for the food to come out in one piece. If you use a can opener instead of the pull top, it comes out just fine.

G/D Aging Care - Horrible Sticky Texture Sticks to Everything

AB

My dog was on the K/D food for kidney disease but we discovered late last year she also has pancreatitis, so had to switch to aging care can food (she can't do dry as swallows instead of chewing). The first several cases were very odd as crumbles flew everywhere trying to get out of the can. We thought it was normal so fed her as I saw others had reviewed the same. Then one day, we received a case that was actually good. It came out of the can easily and you could cut up into crumbles yourself without it flying everywhere making it so we could measure the food for each meal. Since then I had expired food, and the old crumbly stuff again until I finally received good cases for a while until Saturday. I received a new batch and the cans were now the flip top and the food is sticky and comes out in globs that can't be measured at all. It sticks to the spoon, bowl and everything it touches. I will not feed that to my dog so had another sent that arrived on Monday. It's the same horrible consistency so called back today. They said those 2 batches came from 2 different warehouses so not sure what happened to the formula. They are opening a case today to check it then send me a new case from a different batch. I'm praying this is edible for my aging dog as she has to eat and I need to be able to measure it instead of scraping from the spoon with my fingers as it also sticks to my fingers. I assume it would also stick to the roof of her mouth. Please pull this terrible stuff from all checks and get back to the consistency that I believe everyone is asking for in reading many other reviews. We are all complaining about the same thing. Thank you.

Thank you for your review. We are disappointed to hear of your experience. Dry and crumbly canned product can be the result of exposure to very cold temperatures during transportation and distribution. Please be assured that every truck load of canned product leaving our canning facility during cold weather months, uses thermal blankets. In addition, canned products receive priority upon arrival to distribution centers. While it is difficult to tell the exact cause for this change in texture, we can assure you that the sticky variation has no impact on the nutritional value of the food. Some possible causes of the variation are the freshness of the product or temperatures the food has been exposed to during distribution. A freshly produced product can appear softer or stickier and will generally increase in firmness as it ages. Some formulas with higher starch levels, can take longer for the starch to regenerate into a firmer loaf. If you go from using an older can to a newer can, there might be a noticeable difference in texture. To meet specific nutritional needs, some of our formulas have higher levels of carbohydrates. Products with this unique nutrient profile may experience textural changes upon large temperature fluctuations. High temperatures won't allow the starches to re-associate which leaves the product sticky. All of our products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed. If you would like to take advantage of this guarantee, please return the unused portion of the product to the place of purchase for a refund or exchange. Hill’s Pet Nutrition

Pull-Tab Can is Awful

JRS

The consistency of this food has been problematic over the last year or two. Sometimes firm, sometimes like wet cement, sometimes encased in white fat, sometimes not. I continue to use it because my dog has heart disease and the vet feels this is the right food to be on. Now, I just received two cases with the new pull-tab opening. In theory, this should be great. But, it's terrible. The opening of the can is now too small to get the food, which is wider, through it. You can shake it, smack the bottom ,whatever, it doesn't come out. I need this to come out in one full piece bc it has to be cut into three equal servings. Now its just one huge mess. In addition, this latest batch is, once again, like cement. It sticks to the plate like glue and my dog can barely get it off the plate to eat it. This consistency usually gives him the runs. Anyway, this is really disappointing. At the very least, please fix the packaging. Not being able to get the food through the opening of the new can is ridiculous. How did no one notice this before you sent it out to retailers?

Pop off lid but hard to get out of can - new formula?

Rondi

March 28 2024 - bought a new case which now has a pop off lid which is good, BUT the formula must have changed because it’s like a brick. I use a fork which takes some effort, add warm water and try to mash it up. Not sure what happened. It almost looks like their I/D formula

Very frustrating

The new pop top makes it almost impossible to get the food out of the can. It takes five minutes of shaking until you can't shake anymore before it finally pops out. Don't even try to pry..... it will bend your metal forks.

What is the phosphorus content in this? Is it kidney friendly? (Low protein and low phosphorus)

  1. I can't answer about the phosphorus content because I don't see it listed on the cans. If I were you I'd reach out to the manufacturer directly for that info. As for it being kidney friendly, I would say yes. My dog is a diabetic and also has signs of protein in his urine so his kidneys aren't functioning 100%. My vet first prescribed the w/d formula for his diabetes but once the kidney issue came into play, she changed him to this g/d formula.
