Canned Food Texture of Peanut Butter

Woodie16

I had been purchasing this product from my Vet for my elderly dog for many years in the kibble formula. I had been very satisfied with the kibble but as my dog aged and doesn't have as good of teeth any longer, I switched him to this canned version. He was doing very well with it until the new cases arrived. I opened a can last night and the consistency is that of peanut butter. It is so sticky that all he does is push the bowl around on the floor trying to get the food. Then he falls down because he does not have the use of his rear legs any longer. I am very discouraged by whatever change you made to this food. Will you be going back to the original formula/texture? I am going to have to return 2 cases of unopened food to my Vet since my dog cannot even eat this!

Thank you for reaching out to us. While it is difficult to tell the exact cause for this change in texture, we can assure you that this variation has no impact on the nutritional value of the food. Some possible causes of the variation are the freshness of the product or temperatures the food has been exposed to during distribution. A freshly produced product can appear softer or stickier and will generally increase in firmness as it ages. Some formulas with higher starch levels, can take longer for the starch to regenerate into a firmer loaf. If you go from using an older can to a newer can, there might be a noticeable difference in texture. This can be compared to preparing spaghetti. After cooking the spaghetti, it is very soft and moist. If maintained in a hot environment, it stays moist and soft for much longer than if placed in a fridge and exposed to cooler temperatures.

Different formula!

This product was great until the texture changed. It is sticky and gummy. The formula had to have been changed since this seems like a completely different dog food. Although I will still feed my dog Derm Complete dry, I am looking for a different wet food. I am highly disappointed. This is an expensive food and seems almost inedible due to the change in consistency and texture.

Thank you for your feedback. To meet specific nutritional needs, some of our formulas have higher levels of carbohydrates. Products with this unique nutrient profile may experience textural changes upon large temperature fluctuations. High temperatures won't allow the starches to re-associate which leaves the product sticky. All of our products are 100% satisfaction guaranteed. Formulation Change?

Joe

My dog has been eating this food for years with no problems until recently. Over the past 3-4 months every case we get has been sticky, gross sludge that she struggles to eat. It doesn't come out of the can. She can't chew it and it gets stuck in her mouth/throat. Feeding this to our dog almost seems dangerous now.

Bad. Your dog can choke on this product.

Lola

This product used to be good, but now the consistency is like sticky peanut butter. We have to spoon feed our dog because if she starts eating gobs of this stuff she will actually choke on it. We've had to use our fingers to get the food out of her mouth so she wouldn't choke on it. It's a gross mixture and was much better when it had a more solid consistency.

New texture is terrible

We have been feeding our dog Derm Complete canned for almost a year with no issues, but the last case we bought was a totally different texture, it’s so gummy and sticky our dog has an extremely hard time eating it. It’s also horrible to clean it out if the bowl. It seems to be a totally different formula, it’s nothing like the prior food.

No way

First ingredients are corn starch, soy protein and soybean oil. No meat as far as I can tell. Is this what the wolves evolved on? I'm returning it today!!

Thank you for the feedback. We maintain the highest standards of quality control for our manufacturing facilities, our ingredients, and our finished products. We source meat and poultry ingredients from plants that process foods for human consumption. The ingredients we use offer consistency and high quality. The ingredients help to offer proper balance in nutrition. Corn starch is a source of carbohydrates, and is a great source of energy for your pet. We use high quality soybean oil. The oil is purified and contains no soy protein of any kind. In fact, studies in people prove that individuals allergic to soybeans can safely consume soybean oil. We do not expect any problems associated with vegetable oil. Too sticky! Impossible to eat!

Shebo

The inconsistency with this Hill's Egg and Rice recipe is horrible. One case is perfect then the next is so sticky my dog struggles to even get it down. Its so sticky he can't get it out of his mouth. It sticks to the inside of his mouth and I'm afraid he's going to choke on it.

My dog was having red bumbs appear on her stomach and along her back that would scab and peel off leaving her coat looking moth eaten. After starting this food she almost never has any more bumps, and when she does I can always trace it back to her getting something to eat that she shouldn't have.
