For best results, do not mix with non-clumping cat litter. For first time use, start with an empty, clean cat litter box. Fill your clean litter box with 3 to 4 inches of Fresh Step Simply Unscented Cat Litter. Remove clumps and solids daily and dispose in trash. Do not flush. The rest of the litter stays fresh. Add more litter to refresh your litter box each time you scoop. Maintain level of litter at 3 to 4 inches.
As a reminder, especially to pregnant women and immunosuppressed persons, cat feces can sometimes transmit a disease called toxoplasmosis. Therefore, always remember to wash hands thoroughly after handling used cat litter. For further information, consult your doctor. Unused cat litter poses no toxoplasmosis threat. Caution: Do not use this product as a traction aid because product becomes slippery and slick when wet.

Simple and clean, but powerful
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] No added fragrance but still controls odor very well!! Clumps fast and tight so scooping is very easy! Less dust compared to other litters I’ve had. It’s simple and clean, doesn’t over power the room with fake scents.

Why does it now have a scent?
We've been purchasing this product through Chewy autoship for years and suddenly is smells like cheap laundry soap. My cats smell so gross now.

Absolutely NOT unscented like it claims
I’m very disappointed in the new formulation of this litter. I used to love it, but now it has an awful, very strong fragrance despite the claim that it is formulated with no fragrance. It also creates a massive dust cloud when pouring it into the box and tracks everywhere in my house, which it didn’t do in the past. I will be trashing the rest of the box and not purchase this again because the fragrance is so potent that it smells throughout my whole house despite having covered litter boxes. I need an unscented litter that is actually unscented unlike the false claim on this one.

What happened??
This has been our go-to litter for the past several years. As others have said here,something with the formula HAS changed. The perfume smell makes us sneeze, gives me headaches, causes flare ups of my chronic lung issues, AND makes my cats fur and feet smell 24/7. Their eyes have been goopy too. I wrote the company an email about 3 weeks ago. No response! As others here have said, the litter granules are smaller,darker, bustier and highly perfumed. I am going to have to look for another brand. My cats any my health are being compromised. Very disappointing. Also very frustrating that no one has replied to my email and that you say there have been no formula changes. That just can't be true. These reviews show otherwise.

No longer any good
Have used this litter for years and it was the best. Within this past year, something has changed other than the color being darker. The granules are finer, it leaves dust EVERYWHERE and it has a light scent.

Why did you ruin a great litter?!
This used to be great litter; almost no dust and UNSCENTED, which is important for my cat with asthma. However, something changed mid-2025. It is now horribly dust (clouds of dust when you pour it out) and an overwhelming perfume smell. Why did you change it?! Also, it now forms a thick sludge and doesn’t clump well. I started noticing my wire scoop gets wet litter caked on it when I scoop. It never used to do this. Please bring back the old formulation!!

What happened to this litter?
We’ve been using this for years, but whatever has changed in the formula recently has made it terrible. No clumping, no odor control and it leaves sludge in the box. I have one bag left and will be finding another litter.

Does anyone know if this product works with the litter robot? I need more litter for the litter robot. I need to know if it will shift through. My cat seems to like the litter bot and spends his time on the second floor. Please and thank you.
- Yes, it does! We have the Litter Robot 3 and this is all we use. I set the timer for 7 minutes to allow it to clump harder when it cycles. I have three cats and I have no odors at all with this litter and it doesn’t crumble when it cycles.

Did the ultra unscented get discontinued? Is it only simply unscented now? The keep sending me this instead of what I ordered. It doesn’t work as well.

Ultra or simply? The item title says Ultra Unscented. The photo and description say Simply Unscented. Which is it?

How often do you have to empty and clean a litter box using this litter? I am currently using a natural grass litter which doesn't break down, so I rarely have to completely clean the box.
- I scoop twice daily and add litter every week it so, as needed. I have 2 boxes for 2 cats. I only do a complete replacement and box scrubbing 2 or 3 times a year. There is no box odor (even with one stinky cat). My friend said my house smells "neutral," which is good enough with two cats!

How does this litter compare to the "simply unscented" Fresh Step litter when it comes to low tracking? I know it says low dust, but I hope it's as low tracking as the other Fresh Step. Thank you
- It tracks a little bit less than others and the dust is lower, but there is still both.

How is this packaged? Is there a pour spout or does the package just ‘open up’? Curious as to handle such a large container with out losing product everywhere. thanks!
- There are 4 - 10lb bags in the package. I love the way it is packaged. Normally I am scooping litter from a giant bag into plastic pails I've saved. I have 3 litter boxes, 1 on each floor & a changing/cleaning station on each floor. With this I don't have to distribute litter or carry any heavy plastic pails up & down stairs. It's a snap! So easy & no dust cloud to choke me or make my fur babies sick. I wish it were more widely available in Canada. It's fabulous litter & viable competition for the company that has the market currently on 98% of pet foods & cat litter ( but is also buying up Canada's natural water supply). PLEASE, CANADA IS A BUSTLING MARKET. WE NEED MORE CHOICES.
