Beautiful, but not without its flaws

This is a beautiful little aquarium with great potential and a few flaws. First for what I like: I love the clean layout of this aquarium. The separate chamber for the filter and powerhead really keep the overall look clean. I was even able to fit a small 100w heater into that area near the powerhead, so the only wire I have that is visible is for my thermometer probe. Also, the light is pretty good. I wish it had a built in timer and dimmer settings to better utilize the moonlight mode, but the quality of the light is quite good. My plants are even pearling in here which I struggle to get in my larger aquariums at home and I suspect the light is partially responsible for that. Finally, the built in three stage filter has a lot of surface area for such a small aquarium, allowing for plentiful beneficial bacterial growth. I anticipate fewer struggles keeping the water balanced in here than with other nano aquariums due to the amount of beneficial bacteria it can contain. There are some issues with this aquarium, however. First, as many have mentioned in the reviews, the intake ports for the filter are a bit of an issue. This aquarium is at my desk at work, and during the fishless cycle I came in on a Monday morning to a mess of water all over my desk and floor. It turns out the powerhead was left on the highest setting and evaporation allowed the water level to drop below the upper intake ports. This meant that the powerhead (on the highest setting) was purging water from the filter and powerhead chambers quicker than the single lower intake could draw water in. This resulted in the main tank overflowing. I lost approximately half a gallon of water and had to replace the heater, which cracked due to the lack of water. As some reviews mentioned, I could see a fish being sucked up against the lower port in this situation, but luckily this happened to me before fish were added. I turned the powerhead to the minimum setting and tried to replicate the issue and have been unable to do so. The reduced flow allows the filter to pull water in quickly enough to avoid overflows. Now, speaking of the powerhead, I find it to be a bit too strong even on the lowest setting. The highest setting is far too strong and will definitely result in the overflow situation I laid out, but the low setting seems to be too strong for such a small aquarium. I have Endlers in mine and while they seem to like to play in the current, it does occasionally send them on a ride. It also prevents food from staying at the surface during feeding time. I'm trying to think of ways to calm the output, but I haven't figured it out quite yet. My only other issue is the lid. I like the way this one looks, but I wish there was a piece that could be placed in the center area, under the light to reduce evaporation. Overall, I would and have recommended this aquarium to others, but it does have some flaws.

Yes, I recommend this product.

I bought this 6 weeks ago. Pump stopped working in 3 weeks. Led stopped working in 5 weeks. The pump and light are near the cost of the entire set up. Not happy.

Too small for big fish and too dangerous for small

This fish tank is very pretty and the filter does keep the tank pretty clean but my shrimp constantly get sucked in because the filtration hole is at the bottom. You have to DIY because even fish will get stuck there.

I was telling my husband how great this tank was and thought I should probably do a proper review. We have this set up in our kitchen and it has done an excellent job of keeping our betta, 3 snails and 3 shrimp thriving. It’s easy to maintain. Looks beautiful. Quiet. Best betta tank I’ve had in 20 years of keeping them.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Good Tank but needs some mods

Good 5g tank but the water flow is a lot for any fish. I did a lot of research on the most cost effective way to correct this issue and found $5 Sponge Foam Roll 6pk did the trick. Thanks Reddit

Probably better options for less.

This tank seemed super cool at first but it isn't without its flaws. The fitted lid makes heaters and other additions super annoying. I'm also not a fan of the open slit in the lit that the light hangs over. My platy was one of the unfortunate souls to get sucked through the filtration hole but thankfully he was fine and no one else has gone in since. Aside from the aforementioned I was rather happy with the tank. I've owned it for about 5 months and now the filtration "chamber" is leaking water from underneath. If it were cheaper, I'd say worth it but as it stands I would not recommend this tank.

Love this tank! Great for my Betta fish

I have used this tank for my betta for years and love it. For those who say there is too much suction pulling fish into the intake, simple solution. As the directions say, you can turn the suction down or up. Pull the motor up from the corner of the tank which is next to the media filters. Once you have the motor in hand, you can see a sliding plus + and neg - bar. Just slid it to the desired intake power water flow coming back into the tank. Bettas like a low flow, so I have mine more on the negative side. I have never had a fish get stuck in the intake with this tank in the many years of owning it

Yes, I recommend this product.

Questions

Is there a cheaper version of this tank? 5 gallon long but without all the extra starter kit stuff?

  1. Yes there are other 5 gallon long tanks but fluval doesn't have one.

What about a heater? Don’t tropical/freshwater setups need to be heated?

  1. Yes, they do. You can buy the heater separately. I bought one that would fit in the reservoir (a tight fit, but it fit!), but you could put it in the main part of the tanks, too.

What's the thickness of the glass?

  1. 1/8” thick glass

How often do you need to change the filter pads

  1. Depends on bio load and which type if just sponge then every 6 months if ammonia or carbon filter then monthly. I rinse my foam filters but dont clean them with every water change

Is this a glass aquarium?

  1. Yes

I purchased this tank at a garage sale, so no manual. A white film developed on the surface of the water and the sides.(no fish, yet) Am assuming it is from the filtration materials. How do I keep this from happening again?

  1. white film could be a dead bacteria protein, which is normal to startup tank. Also if you are setting this near kitchen... every time you cook something with oil on a pan, oil vapor will fly around and land on the opening, which can contribute to the oily film. Aerate in the tank or the small 1.5x1.5 section where pump is located, over time film will disappear as long as no new inputs are made like previously mentioned. IF the white film you mention is more of a solid than the flowable matter, then you may have High Ca/Mg in the water you use, check the Hardness of water. If it is too hard for fishes then add Natural acidifier to see if it goes away. but my guess is on the bacterial die down, if you are trying to cycle your tank before the fishes, you need nitrogen injection to kick start the cycle. good luck.

Does this come with a lid? Photo shows a lid but there is no mention of it in the description

  1. Yes it comes with a lid.

I'm thinking of getting a betta fish, is this tank safe for bettas? I really don't want my betta to die after one month! I've seen all of the reviews which were not so good, but they weren't talking about bettas in specific.

  1. I have 2 of these set up for Bettas and my boys seem very healthy and happy. I do a partial water change weekly and the filter is very easy to maintain. There’s plenty of room for small logs and my plants grow like crazy. I keep some snails and shrimp to take care of algae. I think these tanks are beautiful and my fish are thriving

Is this tank safe for bettas, since the middle part of the cover seems to be open and bettas are known to jump?

  1. NO! This tank has a filter that can easily suck fish in to thier death. Buy something else for the sake of your fish.

How often would you recommend cleaning/water changes with one betta and a couple of cherry shrimp?

  1. I change 1/5th to about 1/3rd of the water every single week. Both from researching into it and personal experience I know it is extremely important not to change a lot more or too infrequently.
