How to botch a simple task

A Breeders Review. This is not my first time using this process. I need accurate timely information on my puppies to access them for breeding. First it takes a long time to receive a test kit. Despite being located someone close to them, it took nearly two weeks to receive the test kit. I took the sample, and followed the instructions with an eye for detail. Here is what I found. The web site accepted my puppy name, but did not accept my em code activating the test. After two weeks, I went to check to see if it had processed yet. I was dumbfounded to see the kit was not activated. I activated it and called them immediately, asking why I had to activate it twice. Worse, they had not even begun to process the sample. Why not? They are now telling me it would be another 2-4 to get the results. Absurd. I have documentation showing when it was returned, and yet they did not even start processing it until yesterday? What they do, is sit on the kit, make money on kits they don't process. And only process it after a lengthy the delay, making decision making on puppies over come by the long delay. I ordered kit on 5-10-25, shipped on 5-11.25, delivered on 5-14-25. Puppy name added, kit activated, and mailed back on 5-15-25. Yet the activation was not performed. I discovered this on 6-3-25. They sat on the processing which could have started. Whilenthey accepted the puppy name, they somehow did not accept the EM code I typed in on 5-15-25. And now they are telling me I have to wait another 2-4 weeks. Idiots! The processing should have started when it was received--about 5-20-25, not weeks later, on June 3rd, with long delays associated with that. I am so disgusted. I need that information now. I should start competing with this company. Anyone could do a better job. Finally, I asked for a manager, and all I got was a ridiculous email. I'll be filing a better business bureau complaint, and I make take it further than that if they won't get off their butts and make something happen. I recommend using their competitor, Wisdom Panel. They can only be better than the worst company i've ever had to deal with.

I had wanted to do one of these DNA tests with my beloved dog that passed away last year, but never did. So when I adopted a new rescue pup, I ordered my test on Petco. The price was great, and I'm happy with Petco, but Embark was a hassle. Firstly, they didn't get to my test for a months and when I checked in the customer service person said that my test was transferred to another location and that I had sent it to the "wrong place". I sent the test in the packaging they sent!
Then, more weeks for the transfer to whatever new location, and when I *finally* got the results, it was completely implausible. My dog is a dachshund mix, and I was checking to find out the mix. Physically, she resembles her mama. My pup is the size and shape of a standard dachshund mixed with...something extra. Most everyone has been guessing dachshund / corgi.
The "results" from Embark were that she is HALF border collie, 1/4 pit bull, and 1/4 chihuahua. I have nothing against these dog breeds, and actually believe that my dearly departed previous dog probably was a pit and border collie mix! However, in this case, it is pretty clear that the test was wrong.
I'm not sure if everything got confused in all of the transferring of things from one lab to another (again, I sent the sample back in the packaging I was supplied) but it's disappointing to feel like I might have been grifted in this whole transaction.
I'm truly happy for all of you pet parents who had a great result, but my own hasn't been that glowing of an experience. I actually wish I had saved the money. These tests are not cheap.

I waited a little while to write this review considering we did it when Bellatrix was just a puppy. We found a dog on the street who ended up having parvo. After she got better we decided to do this test to prepare us for any other issues with her health and to find out what breed she is. This test honestly gave us a lot of insight as to her behavior and her health. We now feel like we know Bella a lot more than when we first found her. We even were able to contact the owner of her mother! Definitely something to invest in of you find a dog on the street and what to check for health issues.

I get the Embark DNA and health test done on all of my dogs. To me, the health part of the report is very important because they check for health issues and breed relevant genetic conditions. I've added pics of one of my dogs profile. You will see she has a few genetic conditions that I never would have knew she had. Now my vet is aware of her possible health issues.

- Yes but you want to use the kit that is for Purebred Dogs (green box). According to Embark, this kit is for purebred dog owners who want a complete sense of their pet’s health to share with their veterinarian. I recently got an A.K.C GSD unfortunately she has allergies of some sort. Will this test give me an idea on what dog food to get her as well as any allergies to grass etc. she is 15 weeks old
Do you test for Caucasian Shepherd or Karakachan Dog? Do you test for wolf?
- We do test for Caucasian Shepherd (also known as Caucasian Ovcharka). Karakachan Dog is not a breed we include on our list at present. It is what we call a provisional breed. This means that the breed is currently too diverse to have a solid base to show up in any mixed breed dogs. That said, if the dog has ancestry from the lines we've tested so far, the results will include Karakachan Dog. Lastly, Embark has a large reference panel of wolves from many populations, so we’ll be able to identify any recent wolf ancestry in your dog and provide an accurate percentage of content. This will be included in the breed breakdown all under “Gray Wolf”. We do not differentiate by type of wolves. Can your DNA test test for an akbash dog breed?
- Hi there! Akbash is not a breed we include on our list at present. It is what we call a provisional breed. This means that the breed is currently too diverse to have a solid base to show up in any mixed breed dogs. That said, if the dog has ancestry from the lines we've tested so far, the results will include Akbash.

Will this test report on eye and heart health in my dogs bloodline?
- Yes. They test for multiple DNA markers in many categories like cataract, glaucoma, heart, thyroid, kidneys, size, weights, colors, shapes, etc. It tests conditions for the specific breeds found in your dog's analysis. My mixed breeds showed seven different breeds. They tested for nine pages of markers with about 25 listed on each page. They found only one area of potential concern that they then explained in detail. It did not show hereditary juvenile cataracts but we just did cataract surgery on both his eyes. However, there are medical problems that can result in cataracts at any age. Being a rescue dog, and having found elevated glucose in one of his blood tests, his is probably caused by medical issues. The test was fully worth the peace of mind in most areas and especially an area to watch out for in the one that indicated potential problems in the future.

Can I use the product for two dogs?
- Each Embark kit comes with one swab and allows for the testing of a single dog. But, if you are interested in purchasing multiple kits, our Customer Service team is always happy to assist with providing up-to-date bulk discounts!

Does the test cover hip dysplasia?
- Unfortunately, there is currently no widely accepted genetic test for hip dysplasia, and diagnosis is based on imaging (x-rays). There have been some recent studies providing insight into the genetics of hip dysplasia, and our test has many of the markers used. We do not presently offer a hip dysplasia test, however, because we are still looking to independently verify that these (or other markers from other published studies) are predictive for CHD for the dogs we test, and determine to which breed(s) these markers are predictive.
