Description

Please note that the product information displayed is provided by manufacturers, suppliers and other third parties and is not independently verified by Petco.

Tangs are commonly referred to as surgeon fish due to having a sharp spine that looks like a "scalpel" at the base of their caudal (tail) fin that is used for protection, so use caution when handling. Adults tend to live alone in the wild, so they should not be kept with fish that look similar, like other tangs, though they should be peaceful towards most other tank mates. Adult Chocolate Tangs are found inhabiting lagoons and seaward reefs of the Indo-Pacific. They will grow to be about 8" in size and have a tan body with red outlining around the eyes. Juveniles look similar to Lemon Peel Angel with a yellow body and blue outlining. Full grown adults of this tang will need around 125 gallons; however, you can get away with smaller aquariums when they are juveniles.

  • - Add to an aquarium with ample swimming room and rockwork for grazing/hiding
  • - For continued health, provide a varied diet of marine meaty foods and algae-based foods
  • - Algae will help strengthen immune system
  • - Should be the only tang within the aquarium
  • - Reef safe: typically, will not disturb mobile and sessile invertebrates
  • - Approximate selling size: medium 2.75"-3.75"; medium/large 3.75"-4.5"

ACCLIMATION: Allow the sealed bag with your new fish to float in your aquarium for at least 15 minutes (but no longer than one hour) to ensure the water in the bag matches the temperature in your aquarium. For new aquariums, adding new fish slowly helps to properly develop the nitrogen cycle, which creates a safe environment for your aquatic pets. A bacteria booster may also help develop a new aquarium for your new fish. Petco offers free water testing in store to determine if your water is safe. DIET: A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of flakes, pellets, freeze-dried, and frozen food, depending on the species. FEEDING: Feed sparingly and no more than fish can eat in 1-2 minutes. Overfeeding can quickly foul the water, especially in smaller, unfiltered aquariums.

Cautionary note, all triggers have sharp teeth and may bite when they feel threatened, use caution when working in the aquarium.
