BEWARE the dust-free claim is misleading

Carefresh advertises as virtually dust and allergen free, this is misleading. If you have ever bought carefresh and noticed lots of particles, that is because their dust-free claim does not include all particles like lint. When dust becomes airborne it poses a risk to rodents as they have sensitive respiratory systems, and overtime exposure can lead to serious health problems. Lint is less likely to become airborne than dust due to particle size, but it can still easily become airborne and inhaled by small animals and lead to similar respiratory issues as dust. Although lint usually settles on the sides if you think hamsters/gerbils will be constantly digging throwing these particles back up into the air. My hamster was constantly sneezing when she came out of her burrows and eventually developed a respiratory infection and was on antibiotics, they are not completely transparent about the cleanliness of the environment their bedding provides. Therefore I’m writing this review to hopefully be transparent where the company cannot. I’m speaking as someone who has purchased this bedding over 7 months, I have an idea of the general quality.

My hamster, who does not like to be disturbed, especially likes this Carefresh product.
The bedding stays fresh for a long time between cleanings. You can hand pick out the wet spots easily. The price is very good for the amount that you receive.

Carefresh Natural is a clean product at a very good price point compared to other beddings The quality of this bedding is consistently dust free with no debris mixed in. The odor control works well for my hamster and my gerbil who really likes to dig. A good amount of bedding for the price and it lasts.

My husband has very mild Asthma, but i herd that this bedding might be very dusty when opening. I was wondering if this would be safe for him? (we already have 2 cats a dog and 12 fish)
- Thank you for your question. Our carefresh bedding is manufactured to be 99% dust free, but some dust may be present as a result of using natural fibers to make the paper for the bedding. If you experience that your bedding has a high level of dust, please contact us.

Is this safe for chinchillas?
- Thank you for your great question. Yes, carefresh bedding is safe for all small pets including chinchillas to use in their litter box or as bedding as long as your chinchilla does not eat it. It's great at absorbing liquid, soft on their tender feet to prevent bumblefoot and prevents odors. However, it is VERY important to monitor your chinchilla very closely to make sure they do not eat too much of it which may cause impaction.

I have ordered this for about 5 years now and I love this product. Lately I have noticed some pieces of sticks? Real thin but noticeable. What is this? Why isn't this in every bag? I've returned two bags because of this, what is it?

- Thank you for your question! Yes, carefresh bedding is safe for all small pets including mice, especially since they like to burrow and sleep in the warm cozy bedding. As with any changes, however, be sure to monitor your pet closely when changing to a new bedding to make sure they do not eat the bedding, causing impaction.

- it should be fine, it's just paper. It can be dusty, when you first open the bag. You know more about parakeets lungs than I do.

What type of wood is this made out of? what size should I buy for gerbils?
- carefresh® is a sustainable product that is made from natural wood fiber sourced from partnerships with tissue and paper manufacturers. This material would otherwise go to landfills. We use 100% non-post-consumer good materials; wood has never been treated. For a gerbil a small bag of bedding (10-14L) will last up to 3 bedding changes for gerbils, a medium bag (23-30L) will last up to 6 bedding changes, and a large bad (50-60L) will last 19 bedding changes. Estimate based on 1-3" of bedding filled per habitat. Fill may vary due to pet size and quantity used.
