Does this work like water softener resin; specifically, does this resin exchange Na+ ions for Ca and Mg ions? If so, would a large amount of Na+ ions be harmful toSouth American catfishes (i.e., Corydoras, Rephael cats, Banjo cats, Bristlenose plecos...)?
- I used it in my tanks that have Corydoras and other South America Amazon species with no ill effects observed. They have to be recharged with salt or they stop working. Na+ ions are not the same as NaCl. Ca and Mg ions are similar in not affecting pH in the working of these pillow resins. It is the compounds that form from the ions with other elements that affect water hardness. There are many books and articles on the efficacy and safety of these resins used to reduce water hardness and total solids as it effects fish health.
