Switched for the Ingredients

Catss

We recently switched to Orijen (in bone broth) because it does not have any bad ingredients. The cats are not thrilled with the duck and chicken variety because duck is a new food for them. They'll get used to it.

Concerning levels of phosphorus!

ConcernedCatMom

My cat recently suffered a urinary tract infection and after investigation, I see that this cat food has a concerning level of phosphorus (almost 2% of dry matter), which is something to monitor if your cat is prone to urinary tract problems. A non-concerning level of phosphorus would be less than 1% of dry matter. The percentage provided here is .44% but they list it AS FED (AKA including moisture content). Moisture content on this product is 80%, which means there is 20% of dry matter. A little math to calculate the percentage of phosphorus in the dry matter is .44/20 = 0.022 or 2.2%. Cat food manufacturers purposely obfuscate information regarding the nutritional analysis of their food by providing Guaranteed Analysis and As Fed percentages as opposed to Typical Nutrient Analysis of Dry Matter. I would highly recommend that any cat owner educate themselves on cat nutrition and how to calculate nutrition by going to this website: catinfo.org. This cat food provides OVER DOUBLE the max amount of phosphorus a cat should have and I would NOT recommend this cat food for any cat as a result.

Buyers Beware

The Duck & Chicken product seems to be high in sodium. Please read the manufacturer’s Warning! Serve With Water! If your cat loves this product, I would recommend you serve it only in rotation with other more healthy brands.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Questions

1 - 2 of 2 Questions

What is the phosphorus level in this food? Where can I find the complete ingredient analysis for Orijen wet cat food?

  1. Not to sound trite, but they have extraordinary customer service and that’s where I would go for this information.  If for some reason they won’t don't want to share it, maybe don’t buy it.  Some companies act like the information is proprietary when it isn’t.  And if you want to charge over $2 for 3oz, share the nutrient levels. :)

It says raw but I wanted to know if this means the canned food is raw or is it cooked?

  1. It is raw, brighter color too in appearance, not the typical grayish or tan color of cooked, canned food. My one cat that simply will not eat raw, won't eat it, so I know it is raw! My other cat who likes raw is crazy about it. Very happy with it.
