American Staffordshire Terrier

The American Staffordshire Terrier is a typically enthusiastic and loyal breed popular for their outgoing personality. Ancestors of the American Staffordshire Terrier were bred in England as fighting dogs—though some were valued as working farm dogs and hunters’ companions. Today, properly socialized and well-exercised American Staffordshire Terriers are among the most loving and loyal companions a family could hope to have.

B

Beagle

The Beagle breed has long been a popular family companion around the world. Originally bred in Britain as hunting dogs, today these hounds are as valued for their spunky personalities as their keen noses and strong signaling barks. The quality of cooperation and teamwork that made Beagles good hunters’ helpers is now more commonly reflected in their role as enthusiastic participants in domestic life. Pet parents value Beagles for their loyalty, pluckiness and outgoing nature, as well as their playful enthusiasm when interacting with children.

Border Collie

Passionate, athletic, adaptable and as smart as they come, the Border Collie is an exceptional dog breed valued for qualities far beyond the herding skills for which it was originally bred. Though still used as working dogs, many Border Collie characteristics make them equally suited for canine sports, family life and even service tasks. Border Collies possess deep intelligence, strong devotion and a free-spirited nature, effortlessly combining many of the most desirable dog traits into one wholly distinctive—and highly trainable—companion.

Boxer

If you favor an energetic dog and don’t want to choose between brains, brawn and beauty, it’s time for you to meet the Boxer dog breed. Boxers are descended from multipurpose working dogs originally bred for their hunting and guarding skills. Today, the intelligence, alertness and enthusiasm that made them such dependable working pets are traits valued by pet parents who admire a loyal, plucky, playful pup. Whether they’re working hard in a skilled job or just working their way into your heart, you can count on Boxer dogs to do it with spirit.

C

Chihuahua

The Chihuahua may be the smallest breed recognized by the American Kennel Club, but don’t tell them that. These miniature canines are known for their big personality and strong sense of self-confidence. Loyal to a fault, Chihuahuas have been known to stand up to dogs 10 times their size as well as any stranger who steps into their territory without permission.

D

Dachshund

Dogs come in every shape, size, color and character combination imaginable. Each of them is unique, and all of them are special and worthy of love. But there’s something about Dachshunds that makes them stand out from all other breeds. Their distinctively long, low shape, mischievous personalities and affectionate nature keep Dachshunds high on the list of America’s most beloved dog breeds year after year. Our guide to the characteristics, care and keeping of Dachshund dogs is designed to answer pet parents’ most pressing questions about their little companions.

G

German Shepherd

German Shepherds have a reputation for loyalty and hard work. They are often enlisted by law enforcement, but they can also make wonderful pets. As confident as they are gentle, a German Shepherd Dog can serve as your household’s unrelenting guard dog but also be ready to play when you are, two very good reasons why the breed is one of America’s most popular.

Goldendoodle

What is a Goldendoodle? You won’t find them listed as a registered breed, and their appealing intersection of looks, personality and intelligence may seem too good to be true. A “designer dog” that’s born from Golden Retriever and Poodle parents, the Goldendoodle holds many of these parent breeds’ best traits while offering a bright-eyed playfulness all their own.

Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus were the favored pets of ancient Chinese emperors. These “lion dogs” haven’t forgotten their august lineage, but don’t let their proud bearing fool you; Shih Tzu dogs are absolute lovebugs who excel at charming the pants off anyone they meet.

Siberian Husky

Siberian Huskies are famous for their historic role as a sled dog. Don’t be fooled by this canine’s wolf-like appearance or icy origins—Siberian Huskies are some of the friendliest and warmest dogs you’ll ever meet. Smart, loyal and more than a little mischievous, Huskies can make a wonderful addition to many families. Just make sure you’re willing to give them all the love and attention they crave, as well as plenty of outlets for their boundless energy.
