Zoo Med's Betta Mopani Wood is a natural wood item that is designed to make the water chemistry of your Betta tank closer to what a Betta would experience in the wild. By placing this small piece of Mopani wood in your Betta tank it will naturally leach "tannins" which will give the water a light to dark brown tint plus lower the pH of your water. (Bettas in the wild live in water naturally tinted by decaying wood and leaves and with a lower pH.) Should the water be too dark brown or not to your liking you can remove the Mopani wood and soak in a clean container of water continually changing the water until the shade goes from a dark brown to light brown or clear. If using a filter with your Betta fish you can add carbon to the filter which will also remove the brown tint. Please contact customer service should you have any further questions.

I purchased my 3rd one of these since September 2022, I love them. They are the perfect size for my betta tanks and look good with the live plants.

Yes, I recommend this product.

My Betta liked. I soaked it overnight before I put it in the tank. She likes to hide in it.

I put it in my tank after rinsing it and it grew like white slime on it and so many little worms came off of it. I'd recommend boiling it before putting it in any tank.

KILLED MY BETTA

I had an extremely happy and energetic betta, only a month after this log was in the tank he died. I even cycled this log through buckets of water for well over a month so it wouldn't be too strong. Killed my lifely and happy betta.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Good quality, but be aware that it is very small

I’m happy with this wood. It’s just what I needed. After I rinsed it off, I dropped it into my 5.5 gallon black water betta tank and it sank straight away. I expected it to float so this was a pleasant surprise. It does release tannins, so I’m happy. It is only about 3 inches long, so it’s less of a decor piece and more for the tannins. This is perfectly fine with me though because I purchased it for the tannins. If you want a more decorative piece, there are better options.

Yes, I recommend this product.

Almost Killed my Betta

I was very happy with this product at first. I’ve had it in my betta’s almost 2-gallon tank for about three week. Even with a filter running, it’s stained the water a rich brown, tea color. ***Today, I went to feed my fish, and I couldn’t find him. I had seen him swimming a little bit earlier, and there’s a top on the tank, so I knew he had to be there… It turned out that he was stuck head-first in the piece of wood. There was a tiny crevice that he’d somehow wedged himself into. We tried to tease him out, but he was clearly struggling, so we had to remove the wood from the water and break it with our hands to free him. He seemed a little bit stunned at first, but now he’s himself. Just be careful! I feel like these shouldn’t have nooks small enough for a fish to get seriously stuck inside of. Bettas breathe oxygen; if we hadn’t looked then, he probably wouldn’t be alive.

No, I do not recommend this product.

Bought this mopani wood for my 3 gal aquaponic betta tank. I noticed the wood swelling after a week. I took a baster to poke at it, and saw it was all slimy. I sucked at it, and it was just a gelatinous blob! Is this safe/normal????

  1. It is normal to be slimy after a while, that is just algae buildup. But the wood itself should not be soft.

Is this driftwood? Also is it good for a betta fish?

  1. No, not really driftwood. This is a great addition to tanks of all sizes in my opinion. I've tried driftwood from another source and returned them. Tried this wood and I'm very happy with it! So happy I've several of 3 sizes in my aquarium! (I have 55-60 gallon set-up) I don't see why it would not be okay for your Betts. Just keep in mind that the water will tint, but it is harmless.

How large is the wood?

  1. Very small, about 3-4 inches maximum. For the price and size I'd check out the slightly larger pieces in the reptile or regular fish section

Would this be a good fit for a 2.5 gal African Dwarf Frog tank?

  1. Absolutely! I use it in my 29 gallon betta sorority tank and have 2 African dwarf frogs. They eat a lot and are very active. I use 2 of these and 5m$ of the almond leaves ! The water is slightly tannin but nothing too dark. Looks great! They have natural antioxidants. Lower the pH as well. Very very good for marine life

Will this provide a cave like structure for the betta to hide in?

  1. No, this is only 2.5 inches in length
