Description

Please note that the product information displayed is provided by manufacturers, suppliers and other third parties and is not independently verified by Petco.

Axolotls are a type of salamander native to two lakes in present day Mexico City, Mexico, and named after Xolotl, the dog-headed Aztec god of fire and lighting. Axolotls remain in the larval form their entire lives, resulting in external gills even as an adult. This condition is known as neoteny and is relatively rare in the animal kingdom. Axolotls will spend most of their time on the bottom of the aquarium, but water levels should remain below 18" to allow easy access to the surface, and be sure to have a secure lid to prevent escape.

  • - Axolotls have both lungs and gills
  • - They are capable of regeneration, often regenerating lost limbs or tails
  • - This salamander is nocturnal and should be offered rocks, caves and plants for hiding places to avoid light
  • - It is best to use a sand substrate or bare aquarium as Axolotls may eat gravel which could cause intestinal impaction
  • - Young Axolotls may nip at each other. Adults can be kept together, but Axolotls should not be kept with other aquatic life
  • - Aprox. Selling Size: 3-4 inches

ACCLIMATION: Allow the sealed bag with your new fish to float in your aquarium for at least 15 minutes (but no longer than one hour) to ensure the water in the bag matches the temperature in your aquarium. For new aquariums, adding new fish slowly helps to properly develop the nitrogen cycle, which creates a safe environment for your aquatic pets. A bacteria booster may also help develop a new aquarium for your new fish. Petco offers free water testing in store to determine if your water is safe. DIET: A well-balanced diet consists of a variety of flakes, pellets, freeze-dried, and frozen food, depending on the species. FEEDING: Feed sparingly and no more than fish can eat in 1-2 minutes. Overfeeding can quickly foul the water, especially in smaller, unfiltered aquariums.
