After a short and general cleaning, your pet should not be uncomfortable, although the teeth and gums may be slightly more sensitive. Pets will likely be slightly drowsy after general anesthesia for up to 12 hours after the procedure. Most patients do very well and are back to normal with in a few hours after a simple procedure.
Your pet's first professional dental cleaning should occur when they are between 3 and 5 years old. After that, routine veterinary checkups can help promote good oral health, as your vet can advise you about the need for future dental cleanings or extractions.
Do dogs really need to have their teeth cleaned?
Depending on the invasiveness of the cleaning, the procedure can last anywhere from about 40 minutes to several hours. In some cases, where pets have severe dental disease, the procedure will be staged, meaning that your pet will undergo two separate procedures with some time in between.
In order to effectively clean a pet's teeth, they need to be placed under general anesthesia. While anesthesia poses some risk of complications, the benefits of professional dental cleanings far outweigh the risks in most cases.
Professional dental cleanings by a veterinarian are necessary to remove plaque and tartar from your pet's teeth. Under anesthesia, plaque and tartar are removed from all tooth surfaces using a combination of hand and mechanical scalers. Brushing with a dog or cat toothbrush and toothpaste at least every two days is necessary to remove plaque from healthy teeth before it has a chance to harden into tartar.

Voodoo recently had dental cleaning and work done on her teeth. I'm wondering what is the best products to get to help keep her teeth cleaned. She also has gingivitis. Thank you!
Need to get my cats teeth cleaned
Help! My 10 year old chihuahua has gingivitis and I cannot afford a veterinarian at the moment. I have done some research about home remedies such as Aloe Vera with hydrogen peroxide, but I don’t want to take any risks of poisoning my chihuahua. I need a recommendation for what brand of dental care I should use to make the gingivitis less severe than it already is. I am aware that it is irreversible and teeth extraction is a requirement if I want my dog to be free of pain and recover quicker.
What product should I use to get rid of my puppy’ teeth calculus?
Where can I get my dogs teeth cleaned without having to pay a lot of money?
Does my cat need to have her teeth cleaned by a vet or can I take care of this by myself?
I have a 8 yr old jack Russell mix. My vet said she needs teeth cleaning, gum treatment and one tooth extracted. The cost is between $650-850. I cannot afford that. Does Petco provide this service at discounted prices?
Are there vets that specialize in teeth cleaning?
My vet told me to get my dogs teeth professionally cleaned but we can't afford it, what is the best way to get my dogs teeth cleaned at home? She is a cross of Pomeranian and Yorker, she is 8 years old.
Hi! Iam si excited about this service! I knew Christie Long in Mexico and I think this is a great idea! I don't know how this works but I have a cat, Meatball, who had 11 teeth pulled 16 months ago bc they were rotten. They said there was one with a crack but did not remove it then. I cannot afford another $1500 dental bill but the area around the cracked remaining tooth looks a little red. What should I do?
My 12 year old Boston has CHF so she cannot have her teeth cleaned. I purchased some Well Good dental wipes at my Petco. I am wondering if general over the counter dental items are ok to use? or, would some dental solutions be better?
Hello! I try my best to keep her teeth looking good. They were even complimented at her dental cleaning earlier this year. I usually give her oravet dental chews but now she refuses to eat them. & she hates toothpaste, it’s enzymatic & I’m only able to get a little in her mouth but I don’t know if that works. What are some alternative products? Thanks!
