He should be eating some greens and vegetables as well. Avoid the fish flakes as they are high in protein. Use both a multivitamin powder and a calcium powder on the food. Rep-Cal and Zoo Med products can be found in the local Petco. Make sure the UVB light is not blocked by glass, plexiglass or fine mesh. Depending on the strength of the bulb, place the source between 12 and 18 inches from the surface of the basking area. Provide a piece of cuttlebone to float in the tank as a calcium supplement for when he wants to munch it. I am not sure of my turtles age. I have had her for 3 yrs. Dosen't seem to be growing and I'm concerned about the underneath shell. Looks like it is splitting. She is in a 10 gal tank always by the window for sun. Is the tank to small? She eats
That hinge on her plastron (bottom shell) is normal. It is supposed to appear "split". That allows her to close up securely when she retracts her head. These turtles do not get as big as other species, but a 10 gallon tank is too small. She also needs a UVB light source. Windows will block most of the sun's beneficial rays. You can find a UVB light source in most pet stores. A popular brand is the ZooMed ReptiSun light. They are good eaters, eating a wide variety of animal protein, plant matter and commercial diets. He can use a plastic tote until you get a tank, but it should be a much larger one than Guido is in right now. Find one that is at least 20 gallons. Provide water deep enough for him to swim in as well as a dry area to rest and bask. Provide a water filter, water heater,heat lamp and UVB light source. You can feed a commercial pelleted or stick diet supplemented with fresh greens and prey such as feeder fish or nightcrawlers. He may not be eating because water or ambient temperatures are too low. My red silder turtle shell is soft! What should i do now !
Given Shiro's size/age, the shell may be a bit pliable yet. Be sure to provide UVB lighting. It should be no more than 14 inches away from the basking spot and not blocked by glass, plexiglass or fine mesh. Feed a quality commercial pellet or stick diet and supplement with a calcium powder and a multivitamin. A piece of cuttlebone can be left in the tan for Shiro to munch on.
